If there's some homework or a  paper you haven't picked up, and you want it, then just ask and I'll get it to you.
If you want to know your test scores I'll have them soon.

Extra credit may be turned in up until the morning (before noon) of Thursday, June 10. It may be turned in to my box in the Art Studio mailroom or through email, if appropriate.

End of term:
Bring blue scantron, half sheet to lecture on Wednesday for the final.
Your papers will be returned in section this week.
Check your absences and homeworks with me, to make sure that you're getting appropriate credit.

Week 10: the end

Homework:

Week 10 review sheet (checked off and returned in class, so you can use it  to study)

Extra credit point of the week: Same as last week.
News: Final exam in lecture on Wednesday, no symposium.

I won't be doing a review session in section. We'll be finishing up reading and doing course evaluations.

Week 9: So close, yet so far

Homework:

Due this week:
Paper 2 in lecture Wednesday and uploaded through class website
Week 9 review sheet

Due next week:
Week 10 review sheet
final exam in lecture

Extra credit point of the week:
Google your way to extra credit! Find a good, useful website relating to each of our 10 weeks here in 1A. On your syllabus where the reading assignments are you'll notice that the theme of each week is neatly summarized (this information is also useful for the final). Find at least one website that relates to that theme for each week. Make them good ones! We want to build up good resources for next term's 1A students. You'll get 1 point for finding a decent link for each week, and more points if you do an even more wonderful, thorough, useful job than that.
News:
Before next week, check in with me to make sure I have accurate records for your attendance and homeworks.

Remember- 4 absences equal a 0! Be careful if you're on the edge!

Paper 2 grading sheet: note that 2 (or more) readings are required in this paper as well.
Also note that you are required to act on the advice in the "in the next paper, be sure to" part
of last paper's grading sheet.
You must attach last paper's grading sheet to this paper.
If you cite the Sobachek article, you can cite the reader as it was not otherwise published.
If you cite the 5 codes handout from lecture, you can cite it as a class handout.

Week 8: Now we all know each other. And by the way, I'm happy with how well you're doing.

Homework:

Due this week:
Week 8 review sheet
Draft (about 3-5 pages or more) due in section

Due next week:
Paper 2 due in Wednesday lecture and uploaded through class website
Week 9 review sheet

Extra credit point of the week:
This is a good one! Attendance slip competition! Create an attendance slip to be reproduced and used as an ACTUAL ATTENDANCE SLIP for 1A! Such fame you never imagined. It must be wonderful and somehow tie in  to some Visual Literacy concept. Winner gets a percentage point added to final grade. Honorary mentions get either half or full percentage points, depending. This offer good through week 9.

News:
I will be in office hours from 1:00-2:00 on Tuesday instead of 1:00-2:30. You can set up a meeting with me anytime, though, as well as emailing, etc.

If you're reading this you're not a slacker but I'll give slacker warning anyway - remember not to let your absences pile off, and don't you dare fall asleep in lecture! Refer to the syllabus if you forgot what happens when you let these terrible things come to pass.

Me, several of your other Art Studio TAs and some of your classmates (if your classmates are enrolled in the CCS Do It Together class) are in a very fun show in LA this weekend. More of a happening than an art show, really. 1770 Glendale Blvd in Silver Lake 6:00-9:00 on Saturday, May 22. Awesome and super fun! Contact me for directions and tips on what else to do while you're in the area.

Week 7: The week where you get your paper back, and realize that the final is just three weeks away

Homework:

Due this week:
Week 7 review sheet
Thesis paragraph for paper 2 due in section

Due next week:
Week 8 review sheet
Draft (about 3-5 pages or more) due in section

Extra credit point of the week: Same as last week
News:

Week 6: The first paper is over! Aren't you happy now? Why aren't you happy now?

Homework:

Due this week:
Paper 1 in lecture on Monday
Paper 1 uploaded through the 1A site by the end of the day Monday
Week 6 review sheet

Due next week:
Week 7 review sheet
Decide on your paper topic (yes! paper 2 is already upon us!) and bring your thesis paragraph to section.

Extra credit point of the week:
Semiotic codes. Find some artwork wherein you see all 5 semiotic codes as described in Monday's lecture handout (extracted from Barthes' book). Write down, 1-5, each of the codes, how they are represented in the artwork, and what effect they have. Really it will be just like in Wednesday's lecture while looking at the western movie clips, how Prof. Gardner described certain codes and how they showed up in the films. You can do a scene from a movie, a painting, a TV show, anything you want really. You can do this up to three times for one extra credit point each, and turn it in any time before the end of finals week.

News

Office hours are cancelled for this week - meetings can be made by appointment if needed.

News:

I'm available for meetings, emails, whatever about your paper as long as it's not the weekend beforehand (I'll be out of town). So get your questions to me by Thursday night!

Remember, your paper should cite at least two of our class readings.

Do you want to perform in the 13th annual Reel Loud Film Festival?

Week 4: almost halfway over? the quarter system is lame

Homework:

Due this week:
Partial draft of paper (at least three pages)
Rewrite your descriptive paragraph based on written comments. Avoid first person narrative and in-depth analysis. Write for a reader who has never seen Dinh Lê's work.
Review sheet for week 4

Due week 5:
Final draft of paper due in section, the full 6-8 pages including cover page, bibliography, etc etc.
Review sheet for week 5

Extra credit point of the week:
Go to an art museum in Los Angeles, and choose an exhibition to critique. It can either be a big show like the Diane Arbus retrospective at LACMA, or simply part of the permanent collection - as long as it is curated under a theme. Write a critique of the presentation of the artwork, supporting your assertions with evidence. Drawings or other visual supplements are very welcome, but not required. The final critique should be at least two pages long.
You can complete this assignment any time up until the end of finals week. You can repeat it up to three times. I wrote this guide to LA museums for my students last quarter, you should find it useful.
News:
Mother's day is coming up... don't forget to send a card.

Week 3: so much to do, so little time

Homework:

Due this week:
review sheet for week 3
thesis paragraph

Due week 4:
Partial draft of paper (at least three pages)
Rewrite your descriptive paragraph based on written comments. Avoid first person narrative and in-depth analysis. Write for a reader who has never seen Dinh Lê's work.
Review sheet for week 4

Extra credit point of the week:

You are the curator! Go to the University Art Museum, consider all of Dinh Lê's work that is shown there, and redesign the exhibition of his work. Your design should include drawings and a two page written explanation of why your design is the best possible way to exhibit the work. You should also include a new title that fits with your unique design and concept.
This project will improve your paper, so I recommend doing it as soon as possible. However, I'll accept it any time before May 3.

News:

Studio Art honors students have another opening this week after symposium - last week's was great as you know if you were there. Not required, but interesting, fun and there's food!

Shots Magazine is holding a competition for college-level students. If you're a photographer (and I know a bunch of you are) and want to try and get your photographs published, get in touch with me or look on the bulletin board in the darkroom for more details.
