The purpose of your 1A section is to process and analyze the class material as a group. Lectures, readings, symposium and papers can turn into a wild mass of information, and we work together to tame it.
Class website: http://www.arts.ucsb.edu/faculty/gardner/classes/artst1a/index.html
Contains general class information
Section website: www.rebeccatuynman.com/1a
Contains information specific to this class, including homework. You are responsible
for checking the site – if I forget to mention something in class I’ll
have it on the site.
Weekly homework:
Review sheet
Symposium response
Writing assignment
Point of the week: Each week an opportunity for an extra credit point will
be provided. That adds an extra % point to your final grade, so if you do all
10 you’ll be raised a full grade!
Attendance: 25% of your grade is attendance and participation. At each lecture
you will fill out and turn in an attendance slip. At each symposium you will
write and turn in your symposium response. Each unexcused absence will make
a significant dent in your grade. Four unexcused absences will result in an
F for attendance and participation. Sleeping for any period of time in any lecture
or symposium will be counted as an absence. Absences are only excused with written
documentation, such as a note from the judge presiding over your case, or the
surgeon who was operating on you.
Required Texts:
* Ways of Seeing
* Course Reader (bring to class each week)
* Writing manual of your choice (Many of you have A Writer’s Reference,
but any manual that will guide you in writing and grammar is acceptable)
Recommended Text:
A Short Guide to Writing About Art, by Sylvan Barnet. You’ll probably
have to get this through Amazon, but if you’re going on in studying art
or art history, you’ll be very glad you have this book.
