Doesn't this fossil look stoked? |
| 101502 |
Ok, now I'm just showing you the funny fossils.
Or skeletons. I don't know what to call them but they're funny.
Look at this guy's back legs! The Smithsonian did a really good
job in mounting the bones to have a lot of character. There
are some especially good monkey ones. |
| 101602 |
On Sunday I did a pop-up book workshop at LACMA.
This boy doesn't seem too happy with his. |

Sometimes I take pictures while in traffic. |
| 101802 |
Pretty planes at the Smithsonian. I'm sure they're
very important for some reason. The space shuttle landed today. |

| 102002 |
Danielle and Rachelle came over today and we had
tea and showed each other bookmaking techniques. Here's Danielle
asking Rachelle's opinion on some of her prints. |
| 102102 |
Since we saw Danielle yesterday I thought I'd
put her up today as well. These are her ankles, in case you
don't recognize them. |
| 102202 |
What spacemen eating on a spaceship look like.
Note the food tray with the food all secured, and the view out
the circular window. |

Another picture taken while stuck in traffic. |

Jeff and Megan threw a pumpkin carving party last
night, with fabulous results. A Cal Arts education did not go
to waste with those people. Here's John carving his second pumpkin. |
| 102502 |
This old house is in a big empty lot at the Temple-Beaudry
intersection, practically under the 101 freeway. Everything
else around is developed, this empty house always makes me wonder
what its story is. I'm not the only one who's noticed it - once
in a video store I saw a painting of it. |

If you think there's something odd about this
picture, it's because it's a picture of a picture. A book cover,
actually. It still counts as mine though, and if you'd like
to debate that write to me. Maybe I should start a photography
discussion message board on this site... |
| 110702 |
A rare, fresh-from-this-morning photo. This morning
I went to the Kodak Theater (next to the Chinese Theater - the
one where the Oscars are now) to buy some tickets and admire
the tourists. |

Megan McHone's studio sink. |
| 110902 |
The view from the McHone studio, from a window
next to yesterday's sink. The McHone studio, by the way, is
the same as the Roe garage, in the McHone/Roe home. |
| 111002 |
Visited mom and Josh's house today. There was
a fire in their garage a few weeks ago and it melted the computer.
Most everything else was fine, though. |
| 111102 |
Today was so beautiful after the weekend's storm.
I took these pictures from the roof of LACMA. |
| 111202 |
The McHone doorstop (she does tile work, thus
the Polyblend). |
| 111302 |
The view from LACMA's roof again. We're still
having our pretty post-storm days here. |

A fossil tree and the fossil tree's presumed former

| 111502 |
This is me trying to take a picture of weather.
It was this beautiful day in Santa Barbara and I just couldn't
stand it, how gorgeous the weather can be. You can't really
see it here, but I suppose you can imagine it. |
| 111602 |
Still in Santa Barbara, Garret and I went out
to lunch with his mom and stepdad and Garret made the messy
mistake of ordering unpeeled shrimp. |
| 111702 |
Ok these next few are from Cafe Figaro, where
they serve a very nice continental breakfast. |

show... |
| 112302 |
Yesterday afternoon I hung the Picture of the Day show - featuring
photographs from this very website - at the Silverlake Coffee
Co. If you want to come see it see the information on the link
below (the one that says "EXHIBITION"). |
| 112402 |
This picture was taken from the doorway of the Silverlake
Coffee Co, where my show is currently hung. I took it during
a break from installation. That's Rockaway Records with the
neon, there. |
| 112502 |
We haven't been to Ferndell in awhile. |
| 112602 |
Ear. |
| 112702 |
Look how cute my boyfriend is!
I'm going to be hanging out with him, and family, the next few
days so if you don't get a new Picture of the Day then that's
why.
Happy Holidays. |
| 112802 |
Garret and I drove up to Grandma Lee's (his grandmother's)
house in Bakersfield on Thanksgiving. We hung out with the family
(uncle, dad, grandmother and dog) in the backyard and ate oranges
off the tree until we headed out to Marie Callendar's for turkey
dinner. |
| 112902 |
On Thanksgiving, after we left the Scullins, Garret and I
engaged in some miniature golf at Boomer's in Bakersfield. We
were the only ones on the course, for some reason. It was pretty
cold, but fun, even though I lost horribly to Garret. |
| 113002 |
Grandma Lee's tomato plant, protected from frosty mornings. |
| 120102 |
Today I took pictures of Kathy, Richard and their dogs at
their house for their holiday photo. Here's Kathy and Ramona
resting after the strenuous shoot. |

| 120302 |
More pictures of books. Because of my upcoming Skylight Books
project, you may see many of these in the future. |
| 120402 |
Today I visited UC Santa Barbara. The graduate studios are
under the stadium bleachers (it's not as bad as it sounds).
These are those very bleachers. |
| 120502 |
UCSB stadium again. It's just so darn pretty at that school. |
| 120602 |
I've been at Skylight Books a lot recently, working on my
next show. Garret pointed out that I've become one of the "weird
regulars". Yesterday was Steve's birthday and Kathy made
him this very exciting cake, and as a weird regular I was allowed
to have a slice while regular customers just ate their hearts
out. |
| 120702 |
Since I'm taking most of my pictures for the Skylight show,
I've been lax in taking regular pictures for this website. So
you may see a lot of old stuff in the coming weeks. This one
is from the series of Megan's studio. When she and Jeff bought
their house the previous owners left little notes all over the
place explaining the finer details of the house. This one reads:
"Hook door to fence to hold door open as breeze will shut
it". |
| 120802 |
Oh I miss my girls over at Spiraling Orchard. This is Sarai
last summer. |

Only 15 days until Christmas!
This is one of Amelia Earhart's airplanes. I have been asked
if this is the one that she was famously lost in. Now that's
just not a very smart question. Amelia was a fantastic person
and if you're in the mood to read a biography I recommend reading
hers. |

someone crossing it. |
| 121402 |
This is the 366th Picture of the Day. On December 14 last
year I started this website, hoping it would become what it
is today, namely a way for me to keep taking and showing my
pictures. Thanks for being an audience for me. I thought Brisi
was a fitting anniversary picture, as she was so fond of being
on the site. Agressively fond, really. This may be the last
time we see her, at least for awhile, as I am now out of good
Brisi pictures. In fact, over the next few days I'll be using
up all my "to be used on P.O.D." pictures, so it will
be all new in 2003. If you'd like to see more of Brisi, or just
get an idea of all that's here, go to the subject index (the
link is always on the bottom of the page).
Thanks again. |
| 121502 |
This is quite an old picture, of Isias playing with the balloon
animal supplies Garret gave to the park last year. So it's really
picture of another day. But still a good picture. |

Video game machines at the laundromat. The one on the left
is Ms. Pac-Man, though I'm not sure if there's a hyphen in that.
The one on the right is Space Wars. Both are exceptionally battered

My new project is called "Memorial for the Skylight Diaspora".
You'll be hearing more about it. It will look something like
this. |
| 123103 |
Normally on a special day like New Year's Eve and Holly's
Birthday I would have a theme-appropriate photo. However, though
I did celebrate the new year and I did celebrate Holly's birthday
with her, I first had to work very, very hard to get some new
artwork finished and photographed for my portfolio. So really
my work table is the more appropriate image. |
| 010103 |
Ahhh... a day of rest. Happy New Year, everyone. 2003 is going
to be really good, like going to a cozy bed when you're sleepy
is really good. |

The view from my laundromat. |

The Leons had a yard sale today, and a few of us brought over
some stuff of our own to sell. I made almost $20, and had a
good time speculating about sales. It's amazing what people
will and won't buy, and for how much. That and the donuts
are really the good part of a yard sale. |
| 010503 |
Garret and I spent a few days at Weesha to recuperate from
the end of his job and my applications. We did a very
good job of sitting around playing Uno, watching tv and eating
snacks. Once a day we went on a walk. |
| 010603 |
There wasn't much snow at Weesha, but Garret threw some admirable
snowballs nonetheless. |
| 010703 |
Garret was forced to be photographed in the outdoors. |

An unfortunate legless alpaca eating at the zoo. |
| 011103 |
We helped Michael and Laura move into their new apartment
today. Those drums at the bottom are ones that we had
for years and years, I remember hitting them as a little kid.
At last week's yard sale I brought them to sell and was very
happy when Michael wanted them, because I didn't want to keep
them but I didn't want them to go away forever, either. |
| 011203 |
I went to the zoo last Friday (when you saw the unfortunate
alpaca) and it started raining. This orangutan covered
himself up with paper, and later a smaller friend of his swung
over to join him under it. |
| 011303 |
This is the orangutan climbing over to join his buddy under
the paper. |
| 011403 |
There's a new place on Beverly and La Brea called Sugarplum,
and I think it might be the best place ever for little fruit
tarts and tea and sweets. Very pretty tile on the bathroom
floor, too. The strawberries look really good but aren't
really the best thing there. |

have to give both a Happy Birthday and an apology to Coco, who

with Garret and his CDs. |

| 013003 |
Here's one of the pictures from my show, it's the cover of
McSweeney's 7. In the home stretch for my show now. This
may be the last new picture until the 3rd, after the opening
is over. I will try not to neglect Picture of the Day
but it may be necessary. You can go to the Memorial for
the Skylight Diaspora website, though, and see things there
if you are in need of new images daily. Oh and please
come to the opening, if you're available.
Thanks. |

Paper in my shed at work. I have an art supply shed
at Third Street Elementary, where I keep my red art carts and
my various aprons. No kidding. |
| 0201–0603 |
Some of you may have noticed that I spent a couple of weeks
away from this site. So in order to catch up I am making
a couple of "Picture of 6 Days". You didn't
miss too much, really. Here is a picture from a workshop
I taught at LACMA for the Ansel Adams show on February 4.
I did, of course, also have my show opening during this time,
but never made it to my camera to take pictures of the event
to show you here. |
| 0207–1203 |
One of the pictures from the show, in situ. |

The not so well organized Cosmopolitan Book Shop on Melrose,
next to the hot wings place. I bought seven books there
today, an optimistic purchase looking forward to book-reading
time. |

It's rainy again tonight. |

More messy books at Cosmopolitan Books. |

LACMA bought the old May Company building on Wilshire and
Fairfax years ago. They put in some new galleries and
classrooms on the first floor, and use the other five stories
for offices and storage. For the most part you can't tell
that it was ever a department store. However, the floor
were we store our art supplies was a clothing department, and
there are still dressing rooms, mirrored columns, and really
creepy abandoned escalators. I'm afraid my photo doesn't do
the creepiness justice, but you will have to trust me on this
one. |
| 022203 |
This picture is also from LACMA West (the new name for the
old May Co.) but in much cheerier circumstances. Our interns
have been working very hard so we had a fun day on Thursday,
making cyanotypes out on the lawn and sittting on carpets in
the sun. |
| 022303 |
Extracopy is a little copy place in Los Feliz housed in the
same storefront that Walt Disney occupied when he was just starting
his animation career. This is before Micky Mouse, but
that didn't stop the Extracopy people from making this somewhat
misleading mural. It's all completely true, by the way.
Laminated and framed documentation are proudly displayed and
a I do recommend a visit if you're interested in that sort of
thing. |
| 022403 |
I'm doing a Family Festival workshop at the Getty in a few
weeks, and these are some examples of the project drying at
home. Also some dirty dishes. |
| 022503 |
Lucy at Skylight. Again. I like taking pictures of Lucy because
she always makes it seem like she's doing me a favor. |
| 022603 |
And the storage area of LACMA West again. I used to
think that these mannequins were left over from the May Co.
days, but now that I think about it it's much more likely they're
for clothing displays at LACMA. Diasppointing. |
| 022703 |
PICTURE OF THE DAY ROLL CALL!
I want you in these books. Or on the book. Please email "aye"
because I don't know who's out there. |
| 022803 |
This is me close up.
I don't have an appropriate picture to memorialize Mr. Rogers.
I'm very sad about his death. I wasn't very impressed
with him until I heard some interviews with him in the last
couple of years. Unlike other entertainers who claim to
love children and want the best for them, Mr. Rogers really
lived to make the world better for them. He used his talents
and opportunities to make children feel good about themselves.
He's a hero to me and so I say here, God Bless Mr. Rogers. |
| 030103 |
This is LACMA West from the outside. |
| 030203 |
Today was the LA marathon, and I had to work within the marathon
loop. The downside of this was navigating closed off streets.
The upside of this was walking from my way-off parking on this
beautiful day, and seeing the runners. Here's one of the
early ones, that little guy there. This is about 10 in the morning
and it's all cool and gorgeous out and there's the occasional
impressively muscled runner and then a few hours later.... |
| 030303 |
.... there's the rest of the marathon "runners".
This is mile 18 at about one o'clock. It was hot and too sunny,
and these people ranged from looking sad to resigned to numb.
|
| 030403 |
This was a mystery that I witnessed at the marathon Sunday.
Early in the day, when the only runners were the serious marathoners
from foreign countries several minutes apart, I saw this person
just standing there. Clearly a serious runner, clearly
participating in the marathon, clearly way ahead of the pack
but just standing there, talking to a cop. I wanted to
ask why, but figured it wasn't any of my business. |
| 030503 |
Caleb and Johanna - the Wrights - now live right by me here
in LA! This is especially exciting because during the whole
12 years or so that Caleb and I have been friends, we have never
lived in the same town. And here we are, already going to In-N-Out. |
| 030603 |
This is my room this morning, with the sun just starting and
Christine sleeping in. She flew in from Missouri last night
and is visiting with me today. I predict that you will see more
of her tomorrow. |
| 030703 |
I predicted wrong. I never have had psychic tendencies.
This picture is Christine related, though, as I took it while
waiting for her plane to arrive at LAX. |
| 030803 |
Concrete. |
| 030903 |
My birthday, but I took the day off from taking pictures.
This one is from a previous day, a rainy day at Third St. Elementary.
I think our rainy days might be over now, and after a few days
of beautiful clear sun we're getting our first hazy smoggy days.
Hm. |
| 031003 |

Today I dropped off some of the Skylight Diaspora pictures
at Rock Rose Gallery as part of a Women's History Month show.
The street in front of the gallery - Figueroa - is pictured
here. You can click the exhibition link below if you'd
like the information. Or you can always go to the Memorial
for the Skylight Diaspora website to see the entire show. |

Garret playing a video game at Ikea while a kid who looked
on hopefully finally give up and moves on. It's Garret's
birthday on Thursday, by the way. You can send him an
email here. |
| 031303 |
Happy birthday to Garret! We went out last night and
when returning home with the remaining cookies and candles,
they slipped out of Garret's hand onto the driveway. We
salvaged the cookies, went to sleep and this morning admired
the candles in the driveway. |
| 031403 |
I've been working in Hancock Park, where all the pretty old
mansions are. One thing that really stands out about that
neighborhood is the lawns. They're all gorgeous, lush
and perpetually dewy. I don't know how they do it. You
will see more Hancock Park lawns soon. |
| 031503 |
Another impeccable lawn. |
| 031603 |
Yesterday mom decided to barbeque sausages in the rainstorm. |
| 031703 |
Karen and the other interns at LACMA hard at work. |
| 031803 |
Another perfect Hancock Park lawn. |
| 031903 |
The war started today, ostensibly to preserve nice lawns like
these and the life that they represent. Apparently we are in
jeopardy and need protection. If you'd like to discuss this
matter, Gaby and Kaushik's Buscada.com has a new discussion
board you can find here. |
| 032003 |
Today is the first day of spring. |
| 032103 |
Sarah, one of the LACMA interns, sets up objects on her cyanotype.
By the way, I'll be with Garret in Las Vegas until Tuesday,
which means you probably won't see anything new here until at
least Wednesday (but don't hold your breath until Thursday -
sometimes it's hard to recover from a trip). I recently
updated all the captions and the index, so I suggest you click
those links below and look for good stuff. |
| 032203 |
Today I went to Culver City High's production of "Tommy"
because a couple of my LACMA interns were involved with it.
It looked great but due to some technical difficulties on my
part I had to leave at the intermission. Here's little
Tommy, not talking. |
| 032303 |
Today Garret and I drove to Las Vegas for a combined birthday/anniversary
trip. We made the traditional stop at Bunboy Restaurant,
home of the world's largest thermometer (seen behind us).
Here we are. Drifters. Looking for our destination. |
| 032403 |
We stayed at the Roadway Inn and the Hilton, but I don't have
any pictures of that. I do have this picture of our shadows
in the moat around Treasure Island. |
| 032503 |
We also visited the Mirage and admired the pretty tiger. |
| 032603 |
We drove home today, and thanks to Kathy and Richard had a
dvd player to amuse us. We're not driving here, by the
way. The sun was so bright on the horizon in front of
us that Garret couldn't see to drive, and we pulled over and
watched "About a Boy" while we waited for sunset.
Pleasant. |
| 032703 |
Today I'm home again but I wanted to show you this picture
from yesterday, taken outside the car while we waited for the
sun to set (see yesterday). |
| 032803 |
Garret and a really good rootbeer float at Bunboy in Baker,
CA. I wish I had a rootbeer float right now. |

| 033003 |
Yesterday I worked at the Getty Museum, doing a cyanotype
workshop for their family festival. It was such a beautiful
day, and we had this great location under pepper trees.
I have a pretty good career. |
| 033103 |
Ocean sunsets never get old. |
| 040103 |
I've been sitting here for half an hour trying to think of
an April Fools joke for you guys but I just can't. I'm
sorry. So here's a pretty picture, no joke to be found. |
| 040203 |
The view of Interstate 15 from the Bunboy parking lot in Baker,
CA. |

Flags at half mast at Bunboy. This is my last Baker
picture. I need to go out and take more pictures today. |

Hancock park school.
By the way, I realize that I'm a week behind. As you may
have noticed, I'm working on a new layout. I welcome thoughtful
comments and ideas on how to make Picture of the Day easier
to use and see, and more interesting to enjoy. |
| 040603 |
Hancock park school again. This time, fresh and green like
spring.
Yes, I'm still under construction, here. Big announcement and
change coming soon, though, so keep checking back. Lo siento. |

it looks delicious anyway. I didn't have any.

At the Museum of Jurassic Technology there's a small display
of old dice that are corroding... it sounds uninteresting but
really it's gorgeous, the old celluloid crumbling, melting and
fading. This picture doesn't do it justice.
(Yes, I'm still under construction, here. Big announcement and
change coming soon, though, so keep checking back. Lo siento.) |

A green table at the Farmer's Market. And, I have to
say, this is a fine photograph. I may not be a brilliant
website designer, and I may not keep this site up properly,
but I do give you some nice pictures from time to time.
(Yes, I'm still under construction, here. Big announcement and
change coming soon, though, so keep checking back. Lo siento.) |

Tommy, can you hear me? Another scene from Culver City High
School's "Tommy". |
| 041403 |
One of my students made this card for her dad. I don't know
what she was sorry about, but I sure do like the way dad dresses! |
| 041503 |
I used my bathroom window to trace some drawings, you'll see
me in action tomorrow. |
| 041603 |
Here I am, tracing. |
| 041703 |
In my bathroom, still. |
| 041803 |
This is a picture from awhile ago, when Christine was visiting.
I had a similar picture up before, but I like the patterns and
textures on this one. |
| 041903 |
It's almost Easter, and the chocolate bunnies are ready
for their tour of duty. |
| 042003 |
Happy Easter! |
| 042103 |
A scene from our family Easter brunch yesterday. Jack has
a new baby bunny named Butterfly who, aside from the Lakers
game, was the primary entertainment yesterday. |
| 042203 |
Garret wins the staring contest. |
| 042303 |
Jack carefully takes Butterfly from Garret's hands. She is
very good about being careful with the bunny. |
| 042403 |
Easter wasn't all about the bunny. There's also candy. We
went to The Candy Baron and were awed by the choices. This was
the Bristish candy section. |
| 042503 |
At the Candy Baron again. I can't remember if Necco wafers
are good or not, and I didn't buy any to find out. |
| 042603 |
Back to Butterfly's Easter Adventures. Here we see Jack in
the middle of explaining to us how when bits of the bunny's
fur come off, they fly way up in the sky. After she was done,
Coco said that with her dress, hair, rabbit and story Jacqueline
reminded her of Nicole Kidman in The Hours. Ha. |
| 042703 |
Ok, ok, obviously Butterfly has been a very serious muse for
me but I think it's about enough. Here's the last Butterfly
picture (well, for now). You can ponder the bunny cuteness for
a couple of days, because I'm going out of town. New pictures
on Wednesday. |
| 042803 |
This photo is actually from tomorrow (Tuesday) when Mom and
I woke up very early and went on a walk around Santa Barbara.
We were just meandering through the mansion-lined streets when
we came upon the Mission! Very exciting. And with my back to
the Mission I took this picture of the sunrise-colored ocean
view. That violet stuff on the bottom is the ocean, and
you can just barely make out the islands in the distance. |
| 042903 |
From that same spot I turned and took this picture of the
cross, decked out for Easter. See the mountains in the background?
See how pretty Santa Barbara is? |
| 043003 |
Here's Mom on the steps of the Mission. And if I'm not mistaken,
she's wearing the same outfit in this picture, taken at the
Grand Canyon last year. |
| 050103 |
These are my lovely interns posing for a group photo because
today is our last day together. I know it's not a photo masterpiece,
but I think you can see some of their personality and that's
the best part, anyway. These are some fun kids and I'm going
to miss them. |
| 050203 |
Are you tired of Easter photos yet? What can I say? Some days
are more prolific than others. |
| 050303 |
This is the front of the Santa Barbara Mission again. It's
a washing area built by the by the Chumash indians in 1808.
That lion head in the foreground may be the earliest publish
art in California. |
| 050403 |
Another Mission picture. This was the pottery area in 1808.
Clearly 1808 was a big year.
I'll be on a trip with my family, taking lots of new pictures,
all next week. There won't be any new Pictures of the
Day until at least May 14, but then there will be a big huge
new batch! |
| 050503 |
Our southwest trip! Mom, Coco, Josh and I went drove through
Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada and Scottsdale was
our first stop. We visited Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd
Wright's winter campus. Here's mom admiring the main building. |
| 050603 |
The Biltmore in Phoenix is this amazing, huge resort. We didn't
stay there, but we ate dinner there, and if you ever find yourself
being a multimillionaire in Phoenix I recommend that you stay
a few nights. This is one of the swimming pools. See that opening
in the bottom? With the waterfall over it? That's where the
water slide comes out. And those are flaming torches, there.
Fabulous. |
| 050703 |
On Wednesday we drove from Scottsdale to Las Cruces, stopping
by Biosphere 2. We tried to stop by the craft store at the State
Prison (there was a shack nearby with a sign declaring "prisoner
crafts for sale") but it was closed. Disappointing. Biosphere
2 was probably better, though, ultimately. It's called Biosphere
2 because we are currently living on Biosphere 1 (Earth). It
was built as an attempt to recreate Earth in a fully sealed
and self-sustaining environment, in the hopes of learning how
to build colonies on other planets. It ultimately mostly failed,
and is now run by Columbia University for environmental research.
This is the ocean section. You can see the glass wall, there
to the right. |
| 050803 |
And on Thursday, well that may have been the most exciting
stop of all. Between Las Cruces and Taos we stopped at Tinkertown
on the Turquoise Trail. Tinkertown is fantastic! It's the minature
creations and bottle buildings of a circus painter. This is
his Trading Post, which I believe was between the Chinese Laundry
and Mexican Hacienda. You will be seeing more pictures of Tinkertown
soon. |
| 050903 |
Friday we drove up from Taos into Colorado, where we visited
Judy's alpaca farm. Alpacas are wonderful and very soft, even
these who had recently been shorn. That's Sgt. Pepper on the
right there, and AC (I think that was his name) on the right.
You'll see more of the alpacas, as well. |
| 051003 |
In Taos we stayed at the Taos Inn, which we loved. It was
all old and charming and Taos-y. I especially liked the sign,
seen here. |
| 051103 |
Every seven years, Mom's birthday falls on Mother's Day. This
year, to celebrate this rare event, we spent the last day of
our trip in Beloved Laughlin, where we each gambled $59 in honor
of Mom's 59 years. Josh and I threw a party in Coco's hotel
room for the birthday/Mother's Day event. It was supposed to
coincide with the Lakers game, but we missed it. However, Mom
and Coco both said that the Lakers' win was the best present
of all, aside from time with us kids. |
| 051203 |
Alpacas! Remember the alpacas? I wish I could make an audio
file of the humming noise that they make, so that you could
gaze into the alpaca's eyes while listening to the humming.
Mesmerizing. |
| 051303 |
Today Garret and I drove up to Santa Barbara, and came upon
the annual Bed Races on State St. Four team members push a bed
on wheels with a fifth person laying upon it, racing other beds,
and completing wacky tasks at various stops along the way. Oh
Santa Barbara. |
| 051403 |
Though I am now home, I will continue to show you pictures
of last week's travels. This is the Scottsdale Desert, as seen
from the yard at Taliesin. |
| 051503 |
This is a building in San Luis, the oldest town in Colorado.
It kinda looks it, unfortunately. Notice the beautiful snowy
peaks in the background. |
| 051603 |
Tinkertown's exit. I love Tinkertown. |
| 051703 |
Today Mom, Jean, Coco and I drove up to Santa Barbara and
ate dinner on the pier. During dinner we watched pelicans diving
for their dinner, but I could never quite get them at the right
moment. So here's a photo of the post-dive splash. You can imagine
that there is a large pelican right beneath the water, there,
and that a moment later he came up and swallowed his fish. You'll
have to take my word for it. |
| 051803 |
Tinkertown photographer's studio. By the way, you can also
visit Tinkertown on the web. |
| 051903 |
One of the walls at Tinkertown. |
| 052003 |
Back to the Santa Barbara Mission. This is the old aqueduct,
that leads to the... |
| 052103 |
... old resevoir. |
| 052203 |
Besides the bottle building and dioramas, Tinkertown boasts
a number of poorly-lit collections. This one is of wedding cake
toppers. |
| 052303 |
A pier. Don't worry, I'll take more pictures this weekend. |
| 052403 |
A sunset. Again, not so exciting. But actually, notice that
since this is Santa Barbara, the sun is setting over the land,
not the water. The coastline in Santa Barbara runs east-west,
so it can be disorienting for those of us who are used to the
water being consistantly to the west. |
| 052503 |
We (that being me, Zoe and Delaney) spent Memorial Day weekend
at Weesha. Here's me sitting in the river, reading my book.
Happy. |
| 052603 |
Except for Monday, when we went to Austin's Dad's place and
hung out getting sunburns. There are the girls. |
| 052703 |
Zoe at Weesha, where she became a Scattergories champ, as
seen here. |
| 052803 |
Lauren reading Maxim poolside. |
| 052903 |
We're still at the pool on Memorial Day, here. This is Garret
pre-sunburn. |
| 053003 |
Reading at Weesha. |
| 053103 |
The last of the Butterfly photos. Here she seems to be threatened
by an ominous stranger, but it's really just Matt. |
| 060103 |
Taliesin again, with a tour group gathering. Aren't those
cactus exciting? |
| 060203 |
Today I went to the zoo with Danielle. There was a fascinating
but scary chimp riot. Well, it didn't turn out to be a real
riot, but with all the screaming, hitting, chasing, and jumping
it seemed like some sort of prison fight. The keeper finally
had to come to the door and chastise them, which shut them all
up. I didn't get any good pictures of all that, but here's a
picture post-fight of chimp standing alone. It might even be
the same loner as I saw last January. |
| 060303 |
A statue at Taliesin. |
| 060403 |
Yesterday Garret and I drove downtown and went to MOCA, Grand
Central Market and the Bradbury Building. We would have taken
Angel's Flight (seen here) down the hill, but it's been closed
ever since someone died on it a few years back. |
| 060503 |
Tinkertown again! Actually, I think it may be Tinker Town.
At any rate these pictures (this one and tomorrow's) are from
the scary hell diorama. |
| 060603 |
Alfred Hitchcock in Tinker Town. |
| 060703 |
Today mom and I made christmas ornaments. You can't start
too early! Have you started your holiday shopping yet? |
| 060803 |
Here's mom painting the ornaments yesterday. It looks like
she's doing all the work, and she did do all of it, but Coco
and I helped. Now you all know what you're getting for Christmas. |
| 060903 |
Santa Monica Farmer's Market. I bought sourdough bread here. |
| 061003 |
Farmer's Market again, this time the green beans, which looked
good but I did not buy. |
| 061103 |
Worm tea? I'm not sure what that's about. This booth sold
worm castings, which I can only imagine means worm poop, and
this intriguing sign. |
| 061203 |
Another day at the Farmer's Market. Well, another picture,
anyway. These are packs of flower tops, I'm not sure why they're
selling them this way. |
| 061303 |
Yesterday Danielle and I spent the day in Little Tokyo. Here
she is in the rooftop garden of the New Otani Hotel. |
| 061403 |
Today is Chad's birthday (as well as Flag Day) and we celebrated
at Camp Cantaloupe. This isn't actually a picture of that day
(though it is actually a picture of Chad) because I left my
camera there and still haven't gotten it back. But still. |
| 061503 |
Here we are eating lunch with Danielle at TOT in Little Tokyo.
This is before going to the New Otani, as you saw on the 13th. |
| 061603 |
And this is the rest of our lunch. Really we over ordered. |
| 061703 |
Then we walked to MOCA, past the new Disney Concert Hall seen
here. It's just gorgeous, it really is. |
| 061803 |
Ok, the last picture of my day with Danielle. We came across
this odd tree (after attending the Homeland Defense fair where
we felt too scared to take pictures, unfortunately) that looked
something like a coral tree but with figs growing right out
of the trunks. |
| 061903 |
The last picture of Taliesin West that you'll see here. See
how it fits in with the hills? See how it rises out of the desert?
That Frank Lloyd Wright sure was smart. |
| 062003 |
Laura reading, apparently unaware that she's having her picture
taken. |
| 062103 |
Last night- or this morning I suppose since it was midnight
- I was the first to get the new Harry Potter book at Chevalier's.
Here's the line, which of course went out the door and down
the street. I went home and read it cover to cover. |
| 062203 |
|
| 062303 |
Today I went to a meeting at the Hollywood Bowl, and there
was this crumbly little castle in the back corner bushes. |
| 062403 |
The 101 onramp across from the Hollywood Bowl. |
| 062503 |
Coco and Mom in Gallup, NM on Route 66. We had just eaten
dinner in the Ranch Kitchen in the background, and were walking
back to our Best Western. |
| 062603 |
Cabbage. |
| 062703 |
The field and gym of my high school, Santa Monica High, taken
while I was driving by. |
| 062803 |
Tinker Town again, this time the Mexican part. Note the Tabasco
bottle to the right. |
| 062903 |
Tonight was the Speakeasy, a monthly mixer with guest hosts,
local artists, parlor games, conversation and moonshine produced
by Christine Berry. I made the bookmark for the evening, and
got to be the artist for the night. It's held in a church basement,
seen above. |
| 063003 |
On Saturday Garret and I visited Coco, and marveled at this
bird nest hanging from one of her plants. It is the ugliest
nest we have ever seen. It's made mostly of hair and paper napkins.
Usually I am a big fan of bird nests but this is just unsightly. |
| 070103 |
Six years ago today I moved into my apartment. I was 22 and
basically jobless, and this was the first time I had to pay
rent and bills, grocery shop for myself and generally be a grown-up.
For the first couple of years I had no television or computer
or close friends nearby. I've spent a lot of time alone in this
little apartment, and I'm only going to be here another two
months. So hooray excellent apartment! Thanks.
This picture, however, is not of my apartment. It's Josh's new
room in San Diego, and I spent today helping him move in. I
hope he enjoys his as much as I've enjoyed mine. |
| 070203 |
Another picture from Sunday's Speakeasy. That's the "librarian's"
table to the left, and part of the rummage sale to the right. |
| 070303 |
Little bitty potatoes, good for kabobs. |
| 070403 |
Happy Fourth of July! We went to a bbq at Jeff & Megan's.
Here are Connie and Darrell chatting at said bbq, while person-whose-name-I-forgot
looks at me funny. |
| 070503 |
Today Garret and I had brunch at Figaro, where I had fantastic
strawberry crepes that were consumed before they could be documented. |
| 070603 |
Christine at the July 4th party, temporarily lost in thought. |
| 070703 |
Coffee at the Speakeasy. |
| 070803 |
Corrie adjusting the mirror in the bathroom of the Standard.
She, Diane and I had a good time playing photo shoot. |
| 070903 |
I feel like I've taken this picture a dozen times, and put
it on Picture of the Day at least three or four times. But what
the hell? Might as well stick with what I know. I do like the
picture. Maybe this is my signature style or something.
This the root beer float (I'm going through a root beer float
phase) I had with Diane and Corrie on the roof of the Standard. |
| 071003 |
Today Garret and I drove up to Weesha, to be joined later
by friends. |
| 071103 |
Weesha. |
| 071203 |
I brought up some cyanotype fabric, and we made them down
by the river. Here are some drying. |
| 071303 |
Darrell and Landen at Weesha. See? Gay really does mean happy. |
| 071403 |
The last Tinker Town picture. Remember that TT was started
by a former circus sign painter, and he painted all sorts of
informative signs for his creation. This one reads:
If you smell "Mr. Skunk" don't worry! Skunks, raccoons,
squirrels, etc all call the mountains "home"! Enjoy
your visit! |
| 071503 |
And the last picture of our May road trip. This is the American
Legion hall in San Luis, NM. Can you tell I'm wrapping up the
old pictures? This website's days are numbered. |
| 071603 |
When I put this picture up yesterday (I'm writing this on
the 17th) I didn't know what would happen a few hours later
at this same Farmers' Market. (This picture is from weeks ago,
I wasn't at the market yesterday.) My original caption for this
was about how much I love sweet peas. Now I'd like to offer
these flowers as a memorial for the people who died at the market
on this date. |

Green eggs, no ham. |
| 072103 |
Hanging succulents. |
| 072203 |
Passion flower smothering yucca. Passion flower will do that.
Maybe that's where it got its name. |
| 072303 |
Some more church basement/Speakeasy items. |
| 072403 |
Making an example for my basketmaking workshop at my work
table. |
| 072503 |
I live right next to The Palms restaurant, famous home of
the Thai Elvis. This is his car (well, or so I assumed). |
| 072603 |
Today is the last Picture of the Day. I'm off to grad school,
where I will come up with new projects to amuse you with. Thanks
for being a good audience. I'll miss Picture of the Day, and
I kind of hope that you will, too. |
